Update: Lamar finished ninth overall in the tournament. The FLW College Fishing National Championship is this week at Lake Wheeler in Alabama. Thursday Lamar University’s Brandon Simoneaux and Colby Ogden rocketed up the leaderboard with a 14-pound, 7-ounce catch that carried them from 22nd to fifth place on Day 2 with 25-9. Roy To Get New Trial
The Ninth Court of Appeals in Beaumont has ruled that man convicted of murder for a collision that killed a Vidor teenager three years ago will get a new trial. The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals in February decided that the state district judge in Orange should have allowed the jury to consider a manslaughter charge along with the murder charge. That court sent the case back to the Ninth Court, which has agreed. 35-year-old Kelvin Lee Roy of Beaumont was convicted of murder for killing 16-year-old Alexandria “Lexy” Bertrand. Luther Hoosier, 68, of Orange, Texas, passed away on Monday, May 29, 2017, at Harbor Hospice, in Beaumont, Texas. Arrangements were made under the direction of Dorman Funeral Home. Luther was born in Lake Charles, Louisiana, on Monday, July 5, 1948, to Jenitty (Ramey) and Buckshot Hoosier. Early voting for the Orange City Council runoff election for single-member District 3 starts Monday at the Orange Public Library. The runoff is between Terrie T. Salter and Michael Smith for the seat that has been held by Essie Bellfield. Only registered voters who live in the district will cast ballots in the race.
