21-22 Basketball Preview
The West Orange-Stark Lady Mustangs showed much improvement last season. The Lady Mustangs unfortunately failed to qualify for the playoffs though.
Coach Jimmesha Proctor has served the last two years as the assistant coach for the Lady Mustangs and has four young ladies who are seniors to build around this season. Aniah Henderson, Naudia Watson, Sidnye Antoine, and Tashianna Williams are all motivated and ready to play.
Watson is fast and will serve as the point guard while Henderson is the shooting guard for the Lady Mustangs. Proctor indicated, “Tashianna is a guard and Sidnye is our power forward.”
There are two Lady Mustangs new to the varsity that Proctor believes will help the team. Someone for basketball fans to watch for is Carlysia Simmons. Proctor emphasized she hopes to give Simmons lots of playing time coming off the bench as a backup point guard because she is so fast and is confident Simmons will be a future starter for West Orange-Stark.
Vernecia Collins is another backup that will play significant minutes for West Orange-Stark this season. Proctor exclaimed, “Man, she’s fast!”
The Lady Mustangs have started their season with district starting Friday, December 10. West Orange-Stark has done well in the early tournament action.
Coach Proctor is impressed with the play of Jordynn Patton the Lady Mustangs’ post or center. Patton is exciting to watch as she really gets after it on the court. She missed most of last season with an ACL injury. Proctor expressed, “We’re really looking forward to her playing this year.”
Making the playoffs is the expectation and the goal for Proctor in her first year as the head coach of the Lady Mustangs. They are going to take the season one game at a time and give it their all each night on the hardcourt. “We just have to be mentally tough, get through the hard times in the games, and just keep pushing,” Proctor concluded.
