The chair of the Orange Historic Preservation Commission Tuesday night said the group had a 'Catch 22' to decide about a house that is nearly a century old. Ben Meadows questioned whether the commission should allow the property owner to demolish the house or should the commission block the demolition, even though the owner said he can't afford to repair it. Family Wins Appeal Vs. Orange County
The U.S. Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals Tuesday upheld a Beaumont jury's decision to make Orange County pay for damages to the family of a jail inmate who died in custody. The total judgment against the county was about $2.9 million, including $440,000 to pay for the legal expenses of the inmate's family. The jury awarded $1.5 million to the family for the pain and suffering of 41-year-old Robert Montano, who died in October 2011 in the Orange County Jail. Trip To Kirbyville Turns Special
Allen Nation of Orange last week went with two high school buddies to visit a special man in Kirbyville. He ended up with what he describes as "Twilight Zone episode" experience. It's a strange episode, but a good one. Nation and his fellow Little Cypress-Mauriceville classmates Jeff Jones and Craig Taylor wanted to commemorate the son of their friend James Vaughn. Vaughn's son, Richard, was killed by hostile fire in Iraq. The trio of friends donated to the Staff of Honor project by craftsman Robert Wilson in Kirbyville.
