Orange Council Rejects Subdivision
A man who lives in the Memorial Field neighborhood told the Orange City Council Tuesday he is concerned a child will be hit by a car on Eddleman Drive because of the parking. Marcus Rector, who lives on Rue des Fleurs, spoke during the citizens comment part of the meeting. He said 'No Parking' signs are on both sides of Eddleman Road, but during youth baseball games, vehicles park on both sides of the street. Walter Cobb Passes At 88
Former Pinehurst City Administrator Walter Cobb, who also once served as police chief in Orange, died Tuesday at the age of 88. He was living in Shelby Township in Michigan. Cobb served in the U.S. Marine Corps, the Army and the Air Force Reserve. He then went on to become a police officer in Houston before being named as chief in Orange. Negotiations To Start Soon With SOEU
Collective bargaining negotiations should start between Orange County and the Sheriff’s Office Employees Union in about two weeks. Commissioner Jody Crump serves on the county’s negotiation team, and confirmed Wednesday that attorneys for the union have agreed to meet with representatives and attorneys for Orange County on Wednesday, April 12. The current collective bargaining agreement with the Sheriff’s union expired in 2013 and negotiations have been at an impasse since then. Get ready for major traffic changes on 16th Street at the Interstate 10 overpass. The Texas Department of Transportation will close the interstate overpass and the 16th Street traffic underneath this upcoming weekend beginning at 7 p.m. Friday. Eastbound Interstate traffic will be diverted to the feeder roads. Sixteenth Street (also known as Highway 87) will be closed at the overpass. It took two votes of Commissioners Court Tuesday afternoon before certificate pay for Sheriff’s Office employees was approved to be continued for the time being. The time frame is until the first week of May when it could be ceased unless it is included in a new collective bargaining agreement between the county and the Sheriff’s Office Employees Union. The first motion made by Commissioner Jody Crump, who missed last week’s vote, was to discontinue certificate pay by the next pay period in early April and failed 2 to 3. Cops Monday ended up giving a buzz to a man who stole Busch beer from a dollar store. Orange Patrol Officer N.R. Medina reported he used his Taser shock gun to stop a man running toward a house after he jumped a fence into the yard. Officer Medina said police were called at 2:49 p.m. to the Family Dollar at 1301 16th Street after the store reported a man left without paying.
