Join Us for a Special Program Celebrating the Exhibition The Color Orange
In 1737, artist Elizabeth Blackwell published A Curious Herbal, a groundbreaking two-volume work documenting medicinal plants. To raise money to secure her husband’s release from debtor’s prison, Blackwell personally created all 500 botanical illustrations featured in the publication.
This engaging slide presentation will explore Blackwell’s remarkable life and achievements, highlighting how she became the first woman to produce a botanical herbal on such a grand scale. The program will feature several of her detailed illustrations—including The Orange Tree—and examine her connections to England’s botanical gardens.
