Tuesday was a special day in Deweyville as a new walking park for the community was opened and dedicated to Juanita Rodrick Peveto on her 101st birthday. The quarter mile track is located just off of Hwy. 12 down Spur 272.
Ms. Nita has been a staple in Deweyville since her and her husband moved their in the 1950’s. They were the first in Deweyville to have a television so their home became a gathering place every Saturday night as they entertained friends and neighbors.
When the Deweyville girls basketball team was formed but didn’t have uniforms, Ms. Nita bought uniforms for all so they would look as good as their opponents, according to one of her granddaughters who addressed the crowd.
To say Ms. Nita has a large family is an understatement. Five children, four girls and a boy, and 80 total grandchildren (18 grand, 42 great grand and 20 great great grands) and they all live by her motto, “Where there’s a will, there’s a way.”
Ms. Nita, who is currently under the care of Southeast Texas Hospice, was involved in every club Deweyville had to offer and she played piano and sang at every church, helping where she could.
Newton Co. Pct. 4 Commissioner Leanord “Bubba” Powell organized the event and Sheriff Colton Havard and County Judge Ronnie Cochran addressed the crowd along with her children. Powell said the park will be home of other events including “Christmas in the Park.” The park was created with help from several companies, including Venture Global and Mineral Tech.
