Jo Ann Walker Krug, beloved wife, mother, daughter, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on the evening of June 30, 2016 at home surrounded by her family. She was 61 years old. Jo Ann was born to Helen and Allen Walker on March 28, 1955 in Lake Charles, Louisiana. A graduate of LaGrange High School Class of 1973, Jo Ann received her nursing degree from Mc Neese State University in 1979. Could’ve Been Worse
A woman was shaken, but not hurt Thursday morning after the Lincoln MKX SUV she was driving crashed into the side of Flying J truck stop at Interstate 10 and Highway 62 in Orange. The incident was a few minutes before 9 a.m. The SUV jumped the curb and crashed through the plate-glass windows on the west side. Zebra Mussels Aren’t Your Friend
Three more Texas lakes are being added to the list of lakes affected by zebra mussels. Lake Livingston, Eagle Mountain Lake and Lake Worth all tested positive for zebra mussels. As we head into the Independence Day weekend, these new findings serve as a good reminder to boaters to “Clean, Drain and Dry” their boats, trailers and gear every time they travel from one lake to another to prevent the spread of zebra mussels and other invasive species. Former WO Mayor Passes
An early mayor of West Orange, Jack R. Etheridge, died this week at the age of 90. Etheridge won a three-way race as mayor in January 1961 and served a few months before deciding not to run again. West Orange was incorporated in 1954. City Secretary Theresa Van Meter said city council meeting minutes show that on September 2, 1960, Mayor Jack Dardeau resigned unexpectedly. The council did not want to accept his resignation, but agreed. Van Meter said Dardeau was a relative of current councilor Dale Dardeau. Orange Planning Skate Park
A skate park is officially on the plans for Sunset Park on 16th Street. The Orange City Council Tuesday approved extra federal community development block grant money to pay for the project. The skate park will cost about $131,000. The council had previously approved about $85,000 for the project, but the equipment alone cost that much. Some of the other block grant projects were under budget and the city is able to move that money for the skate park. The skate park will be a fenced area on the northeast corner of the park.
