The Texas Education Agency (TEA) released its accountability ratings for school districts this week. The Orangefield Independent School District had all three of its schools meet standards in all four of the indexes used in the accountability ratings. Entering his eighteenth season as the head coach of the Vidor Pirates Jeff Mathews believes the program is in fine shape. For almost two decades Mathews has been producing strong football teams and good young men. Coach Mathews will have several excellent players returning to lead the Pirates’ offense this season. Orange Rejoins County EDC
The city of Orange will again join the Orange County Economic Development Corporation, but will pay a lesser amount than in the past. The city last year withdrew its support of $25,000 a year to the county corporation. On Monday, the Orange City Council received proposed budgets that will pay the county corporation $5,000 for the 2016-2017 budget year. Orange is the only city in the county with its own Economic Development Corporation, which is funded by a half-cent per dollar sales tax approved by voters. Truck driver spends night in jail
A Florida truck driver got a chance to sleep in the Orange County Jail because he wouldn't leave the sleeper of his 18-wheel rig parked on private property. Orange Police Lieutenant J.E. Davis Jr. reported the man faces a Class A misdemeanor charge of criminal trespassing. Lieutenant Davis went to the International Paper Co. mill trucking terminal at 6:17 Saturday morning. Lois Ann Erb, of Nederland, passed away on Wednesday, August 10th, 2016 at Lake Arthur Place in Port Arthur, at the age of 72. Lois was born on September 11th, 1943 to parents Anna & Forrest Howard. Pirates Want Postseason
Prospects of the postseason for the Deweyville Pirates got a lot brighter with realignment earlier this year. The Pirates were lowered in classification and are now in Class 2A, Division I. Coach Lance Dale believes Deweyville will be more competitive playing schools closer to its size and with the same amount of depth as the Pirates.
