Capital One Offices Closing
Customers of Capital One Bank received letters this week informing them that several of the branch offices are closing or going to an ATM location only. Two out of the three branch offices in Orange County will be affected by the decision from Capital One to streamline its operations. The Northway location on North 16th Street in Orange will close its doors on December 2 and will serve as only an ATM location. The branch office in Bridge City on Texas Avenue will close completely on December 2 and will not have an ATM. Kids Late, Bus Drivers Needed
Some Little Cypress-Mauriceville High School students are getting to school late because the school district has a shortage of bus drivers. Assistant Superintendent Greg Perry said some drivers are doubling up but three high school routes are still late. "They are still arriving late, but it is getting better each day," Perry said. "The tardy bell rings at 8:15 and the last bus arrived about 8:35 on the first day (Monday)." Bobcats Host Longtime Rival Friday
The Orangefield Bobcats are coming out of the summer workouts and the preseason scrimmages in their best shape in the five years Josh Smalley has been their head coach. The Bobcats play a very familiar foe in the Buna Cougars to open the season; the teams have played each other over 50 times. Coach Smalley points out the two offenses both run the Slot-T. Accident at 62 & 2802
At approximately 6:20p.m. on Wednesday, the Texas Department of Public Safety received a report of a two vehicle crash at the intersection of Highway 62 and FM 2802 in Orange County. A 1994 Ford pickup truck was traveling northbound on Highway 62. A 1999 Honda passenger vehicle was traveling southbound on Highway 62. The driver of the Ford attempted to make left turn onto FM 2802 and struck the Honda. Lewis Achieves Eagle Scout Status
Layne Ashton Lewis is the latest Orange native to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout. A Court of Honor ceremony was held at First Baptist Church Orange. Layne is the son of Jeff Lewis and Terri Lewis. He is a member of the Three Rivers Council Troop 23 of Sabine District, chartered to the First Baptist Church Orange. To earn his rank of Eagle, a Layne earned at least 21 merit badges and 12 Eagle Scout badges. The scrimmages are over and now the games that count begin. The Bridge City Cardinals are in good shape as the season starts this Friday night. Council Turns Down Restrooms
The Orange City Council Tuesday rejected a plan to build restrooms at the Riverfront Pavilion but will reconsider the proposal at another meeting. The restrooms had been eliminated from original plans for the pavilion, park and riverwalk four years ago after the cost was two high. City Economic Development Director Jay Trahan said the plans were to gradually add more features to the overall project, including the restrooms. The city opened the riverfront pavilion three years ago and has rented portable potties for events.
