LCMEF Prize Patrol Hands Out Grants
The Little Cypress-Mauriceville Education Foundation, Inc. held its annual prize patrol on Monday, February 13, and handed out 22 grants, totaling $23,109.47 to staff through the District. Orange Man Sentenced For Murder
A 40-year-old Orange man has been sentenced to federal prison for federal violations related to the murder of a Port Acres woman in the Eastern District of Texas, announced Acting U.S. Attorney Brit Featherston today. Ozzie Nelson Ibarra pleaded guilty on Aug. 9, 2016, to conspiracy to interfere with interstate commerce by robbery and conspiracy to use and carry firearms during a crime of violence and drug trafficking crime. County Pays Up
The Commissioners Court approved Tuesday afternoon to pay David Bernsen the attorney for the Montano family $3,175,674.79 to settle the wrongful death lawsuit filed against Orange County. Robert Montano died while in the Orange County Jail back in 2011. His family sued Orange County and won a multi-million dollar award from a Beaumont jury which was later upheld on appeal. County Judge Brint Carlton has scheduled a public meeting on the Montano lawsuit later this month to review the whole matter. The sound of BBs rattling in a container helped Orange police target two adolescent boys as the Camellia Street BB shooters. They were caught Saturday evening after about two weeks of mischief in the Roselawn neighborhood. Windows on cars and pickups were damaged four times. OFD Getting Another Fire Truck
The Orange Fire Department will be getting another new fire truck and the City Council Tuesday approved financing it through a lease-purchase agreement. City Finance Director Cheryl Zeto said the city received bids from financing companies and recommended Bancorp South Equipment Finance. The ending cost will be $450,002.95. In other business, the council approved renewing the juvenile curfew ordinance. State law requires a curfew ordinance be renewed every three years.
