
John Wesley “Johnny” King, aged 95, passed away on August 8, 2026, in Hemphill, Texas. Born on January 19, 1931, in Orange, Texas to Wesley and Odessa Peveto King, Johnny spent his formative years there before making Sabine County his long-term home in the 1980s.
Johnny was a devoted employee at Jefferson Chemical, where he worked as an operator until his retirement. His passions included woodworking, through which he crafted gun cabinets for family members, and leatherwork, notably making his own saddle. An outdoorsman at heart, Johnny cherished his time fishing and hunting, and he nurtured a love for raising horses, embodying the spirit of a true country boy.
His commitment extended beyond his personal and professional life into service for his country. Johnny served as an airplane mechanic in the United States Marine Corps, contributing his skills to the military with dedication.
A faithful member of Parkway Baptist Church, Johnny’s spiritual community was a cornerstone of his life. His faith and fellowship with his church family were sources of great comfort and joy throughout his years.
Johnny leaves behind a loving family: his son, Danny King and wife, Vicki, of Bronson; his daughter, Peggy Wright and husband, Terry, of Lockhart; and his sister, Maydell King of Groves. His legacy continues through his grandchildren—Nancy Wright, John and Rachel Wright, Laurie and Chad Halliburton, Carla and Billy Lawson, Chris and Risa King, Scott King and Beth Boyd, Trampas and Laura King, and Daniel King—as well as 18 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren, with twins soon expected. He was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife, Reba King, his son, John Wesley King, Jr., and his sister, Ruby Riley.
Funeral services for Johnny will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 15, 2026, at Starr Funeral Home Chapel, 510 Starr Street in Hemphill, Texas, with Bro. Clifford Grounds officiating.
Visitation will occur from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service.
Following the service, burial will take place at Pineland Cemetery. Pallbearers include Scott King, John Wright, Chad Halliburton, Chris King, Billy Lawson, and Daniel King, with Terry Wright and Danny King honored as honorary pallbearers.
