The Commissioners Court approved Tuesday a recommendation to designate Missy Pillsbury a department head as Risk Manager for the county. Pillsbury as Risk Manager oversees investigating any accidents or injuries that occur on county property. She is also the director of the Orange County Airport.
Previously, Pillsbury’s two positions came under the supervision of the Emergency Management Department, but now will she will answer directly to the Commissioners Court. County Judge Brint Carlton questioned Emergency Management Coordinator Ryan Peabody if Pillsbury will still assist Peabody’s department. Peabody informed the judge that he spoke to Pillsbury. She has promised him their two departments will work together, and her role in helping with his EOC command staff will continue. Pillsbury was reclassified in October because of the extent of her responsibilities, so no reclassification will be necessary following Tuesday’s action by the Court.
A typographical mistake postponed the Commissioners Court Tuesday from considering a request for a new employee to work at the Orange County Convention and Expo Center. The agenda for the meeting said Event Coordinator Sabrina Gray was requesting a part-time employee, but she actually requested a full-time employee. The Court tabled the request Tuesday and will consider the item at its next meeting on December 1.
Gray also requested the Commissioners increase the pay for part-time workers that help set up for events at the Expo Center from $8.76 to $10.00 an hour. Commissioner David Dubose believes the pay increase is good since it will be paid for through Hotel Occupancy Tax funds and will not be that expensive in the long run. Dubose pointed out that unlike part-time drivers and road and bridge workers that work 29 hours a week for the county the employees at the Expo Center work limited hours on weekends and not every weekend. Dubose figured the extra cost as only about $6 an employee for one event. Commissioner John Banken echoed Dubose saying the county does not want to lose events at the center because of inadequate staff to setup. Banken said one event booked into the Expo Center because of the quicker turnaround would make up the pay increase and that’s the way you’ve got to look at it. The Commissioners Court unanimously approved the pay increase to $10 which matches the pay for part-time drivers in the Transportation Department.
Next week’s Commissioners Court meeting has been cancelled because for the Thanksgiving Holiday.
