
Carthage scored 21 points in the second quarter to take a 28-0 halftime lead over West Orange-Stark and they put the exclamation point on their 11th title early in the second half with a blocked punt return for a 35-0 lead. They would lead 49-0 before the Mustangs scored three TD’s on pass plays in the final 3:42. Final score of the 4AD2 Championship at AT&T Stadium, 49-21.
“We made a few mistakes in the second quarter and you can’t do that against a good team like Carthage,” fourth year head coach Hiawatha Hickman said.
The Mustangs end their fantastic run at 12-4 while the Bulldogs completed a 16-0 season under Scott Surratt. The scoreboard posted that Carthage has won 140 of their last 144 games.
In the battle of big time running backs, Carthage running back KJ Edwards scored from 87 yds. on the second play from scrimmage. He finished with 153 yds. and two scores before leaving the game on crutches. He was named the games offensive MVP. WOS junior Khelvy Jefferson had a hard fought 121 yds. to finish the season with a school record 2502 yds. and 34 TD’s.
Defensively #25 Zakarian Pearley and #3 Tylin Williams lead Carthage with 11 tackles each. For the Mustangs, Ja’Quincy Walker had nine and Channing Larkin had eight.
The Bulldogs rolled up 473 yards of offense to 223 for the Mustangs.
