Game One of the 3AD1 Region III Final went to the Huntington Red Devils who topped the Orangefield Bobcats 3-0 at Huntsville High School Wednesday.
Huntington (28-7) took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning. The Red Devils got the first two batters on base with a walk and a single off of Carson Gonzales. Then with two outs and two strikes on Luke Green, he doubled to left scoring both runs.
The only big threat the Bobcats had to score was in the sixth when they had the bases loaded and one out. Kaysen Click singled, Matt Johnson doubled and then Huntington Coach Shawn Mixon elected to intentionally walk Kaleb Menard who was 2-2 at the time. Kale Spears flied out and Carson Worthy hit into a fielder’s choice to end the threat.
The Red Devils added an insurance run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly.
Huntington pitcher Brendan Fitzgerald kept the Bobcats off balance all night with his curve ball. He threw a six hit shutout, only throwing 64 pitches, with one walk and two strikeouts. Gonzales (7-3) also pitched well, giving up three runs on seven hits with three punchouts and two walks.
One other highlight for Orangefield came in the second when Click threw a strike from centerfield to Worthy who made the tag to save a run. (photo above).
The Bobcats (28-9) will make the 135 mile trip back to Huntsville on Friday to try and tie the series and send it to a third game on Saturday night in Jasper.
