Tuesday night Lee Hayes was sworn in as the new Mayor of Pinehurst. A room full of supporters were on hand as City Manager Tommy Gunn handled the duties of swearing in Hayes to his new duties.
Hayes, 72, is having to learn on the fly. It’s his first time in public office. Councilwoman Cynthia Adams was helping him when it was time to call for a motion.
Everyone on council spoke, welcoming Hayes, and inviting the crowd on hand to attend every meeting to see how city government works.
He defeated incumbent Sarah McClendon by 37 votes in the May 2 Election and says he wants nothing but the best for the city.
“Pinehurst Proud,” Hayes said. He’s lived in Pinehurst 26 years and is a retired postmaster. His wife Regina works for Exxon.
Besides bringing more business to town, Hayes said he would like to see improved street lighting in the city.
