On January 29 the City of Irving renamed the Irving Library after former Irving City Manager Jack Huffman. It is now known as the Jack D. Huffman Community Building.
Huffman was born in Orange in 1931. He graduated from Luther Stark High School in 1950, served in the United States Air Force and graduated from Texas A&M with a degree in Civil Engineering in 1957. He later completed courses in Public Administration at Baylor University in 1962.
Huffman’s first job as a city manager was in Orange from 1966-72. He also served as the CM in Greeley, Colorado before going to Irving.

Huffman spent 20 years (1973-93) and was instrumental in the growth of Irving. The population jumped 60,000 during his tenure.
He was the leader in expansion projects like The Irving Central Library, the Irving Civic Center, the Irving Arts Center and the Criminal Justice Center.
The library was considered his “crown jewel” and it served the city for 30 years before its renovation. The Huffman Community Building is now home to The Study USA , Irving Archives and Museum and Irving Public Library administrative offices.
Jack Daphen Huffman passed away in November 2016 at age 85. He is buried at Hillcrest Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Orange.
