Port Commissioner Resigns
Longtime Orange County Port Commissioner John W. Young Jr. of Vidor resigned earlier this month. Port Director Gene Bouillion said the board of commissioners will likely appoint a replacement to fill his unexpired four-year term. Young had been re-elected in May. The Southeast Texas Examiner, a weekly newspaper based in Beaumont, reported Young was being investigated because he had claimed two homestead tax exemptions. One was in Orange County and the other in a Louisiana parish. Homestead exemptions save homeowners money on their annual property tax payments. Building To Have Bellfield Name
The Orange City Council is set to rename the downtown Orange Community Center in honor of Essie Bellfield. A resolution for the new name is on the council's meeting agenda for next week. The 86-year-old Bellfield was the first African-American and the only woman to serve as mayor of Orange. She served a total of 11 years on the city council. One set of terms was in the 1990s, and the other set was twenty years later. CC Holds Reclassification Workshop
Three department heads spoke to the Commissioners Court on Thursday during a workshop on requests for reclassification of certain county employees. Since it was only a workshop any decision on the reclassifications will be done during a regular weekly meeting of the Commissioners. Each department head had multiple requests for employees to be reclassified. All the requests were submitted to Human Resources Director Lori Ardoin in advance before they were forwarded to the Commissioners and the County Judge. Building Permits For Orange in June
Churches across Orange helped boost building-related business in June, according to building permits issued by the city of Orange. Two churches are getting remodelings. One is the FMC Church at 1301 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. The church, using A to Z Construction Services, took out a permit for $47,000 worth of work. Apolistic Church of Jesus, 1702 10th Street, received a permit for $47,784 worth of work. More houses continue to be constructed in the Cypresswood subdivision off Highway 87 South. Day Two The McNeese team of Manuel and Murray moved up 12 spots to 40th place after catching two fish for a two day total of 9-9. But it was not enough to make the cut for the final day. Day One The Bassmaster College Championship began Thursday in Oklahoma at Lake Tenkiller. It was a tough day for most with 102 degree heat. Fifty teams did not weigh in a bass. WOCCISD Community Survey Extended To July 24
The online survey regarding possible West Orange - Cove CISD improvement projects has been extended to Tuesday, July 24. WOCCISD invites community members, parents, and employees to take part in this survey. The District has been working with a Citizens Advisory Committee for the past several months to identify facility and equipment improvements that would support academic, co-curricular, and extra-curricular programs in the district. House Trashed On Edgemont
A 22-year-old woman was arrested Wednesday night for burglary after a house was trashed on Edgemont Drive. Orange police said the resident of the house said the woman was his ex-girlfriend. Police went to the 3500 block of Edgemont about 10:30 p.m. The patrol officer reported seeing a woman outside standing by a Toyota Corolla. She was bleeding from a cut on a right knuckle and a cut on her right knee. The officer also said she smelled of alcohol, slurred her words and had bloodshot eyes. On Wednesday July 18th, 2018 Investigators with the Orange County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Division were conducting surveillance of the parking lot of the gas station located at 12099 FM 1442 in Orange.
