The Orange City Council is set to rename the downtown Orange Community Center in honor of Essie Bellfield. A resolution for the new name is on the council’s meeting agenda for next week.
The 86-year-old Bellfield was the first African-American and the only woman to serve as mayor of Orange. She served a total of 11 years on the city council. One set of terms was in the 1990s, and the other set was twenty years later.
The council meeting will be 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 24, in the council auditorium next to the Orange Public Library.
