The West Orange-Cove school district is asking parents to vote on a proposed school calendar that would give students a six-week winter break begininng Thanksgiving week and ending after New Year’s Day.
Under the proposed calendar for the 2020-21 school year, staff would return from the summer on July 27 and classes would start August 3. The last day for students would be June 4, 2021, with graduation held that day.
The district’s spring break would be two weeks, from March 8 through 19.
The district’s webpage, where parents can vote to “approve” or “disapprove” the schedule, says the calendar would have the same number of class days as currently held. The Texas Education Agency sets the number of days public schools must have classes.
The proposed calendar has the long winter break starting November 23 as Thanksgiving is November 26. Staff would work a week after Thanksgiving, from November 30 through December 4, and then they would have the holiday.
The winter break would give students and staff the whole month of December off. New Year’s Day is on a Friday and staff would return on Monday, January 4. Classes would resume on January 5.
Other holidays would be Labor Day, Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday, Good Friday, and Memorial Day.
