The Orangefield JV Bobcats improved to 4-0 on the season with a 24-12 win over Woodville. On the first possession of the game, Ashton Sumrall and Kyler Green had big runs to lead the offense down the field. Green would score from 2 yards out to give the Bobcats the lead 6-0. Woodville would be stopped on their next possession when Zach Morrow intercepted a big 3rd down pass. The Bobcats would go and score when Green scored from 13 yards out to give the Bobcats the lead 12-0. The 2nd quarter saw both teams struggle to move the ball offensively until Steyle Spurlock returned a punt return to give the Bobcats good field position late in the half. Green would score his 3rd touchdown of the night to give the Bobcats an 18-0 lead at halftime. Woodville would score twice in the 3rd quarter to cut the Bobcats lead to 18-12. In the 4th quarter, the Bobcats defense would come up big numerous times to stop Woodville from scoring. The Bobcats would add a late touchdown from Sumrall from 5 yards out to secure the win. Defensive standouts were Zach Morrow (2 interceptions), Rylan McAlpin, Kaleb Menard, Skylar Matute, and Colt Longron. Jaxon Briggs and Edgar Bernal led the offensive linemen. On Thursday, the Bobcats took to the road for a two-gamer in Woodville.
The 7th grade started out hot, with the Jaxon Agerton and John Royer connection on full display. This allowed the Bobcats to score two touchdowns quickly. Agerton was locked on to Royer, dicing up the secondary and totaling nearly 100 yards through the air. The defense was dialed in early, led by Hunter Reeves, Case Comeaux, Hunter Block, and Royer, but they seemed to run out of gas and were unable to stop the Eagles from breaking big plays down the sidelines. Reeves recovered the lone turnover for the Bobcats and disrupted the backfield all game long. Late in the game, Agerton scored again with an 8-yard scamper to give the Bobcats the lead, but unfortunately, it was not enough to overcome the Eagles. The Bobcats lost a nail-biter, 24-22.
The 8th grade took the field with the hopes of righting the ship from the previous week’s rough outing. The Bobcats held their ground for most of the game, making big plays left and right, as they were led by Elijah Jones who scored a touchdown on each side of the ball. First, he broke several tackles and wiggled his way to a 46-yard touchdown and almost immediately followed that up with a pick-six to keep the Cats within striking distance. Jack Luker and Kale Spears also showed off their running skills, with Luker having a 38-yard run and Spears steamrolling would-be tacklers. The entire offensive line looked like a different unit as they were led by Carson Gonzales. Coach Coulter must have worked some magic because his kids were driving people off the ball and pancaking Eagles left and right. The defense also had a few turnovers: Jones had an interception, and Cylan Granger had a fumble recovery. This group did a great job swarming the football, and they are improving each week. In the end, the Cats fell to the Eagles 28-14. Both of these teams will open up district play next week as they host the Buna Cougars at home
