Residents Still Waiting On Quiet Zone
Five years ago, a group of residents in the Old Orange Historic District petitioned the City of Orange to implement a railroad quiet zone. A quiet zone would prohibit passing trains from blowing horns at every crossing. City of Orange officials and the city council agreed with the request. The city received a grant from the Texas Department of Transportation to help pay to close and barricade some of the street crossings. Five streets have been barricaded at the railroad tracks to eliminate vehicular crossings. Robert Wayne Johnson, of Mauriceville, Passed away on January 2, 2016 at his home, at the age of 67. Robert was born on April 14, 1948 in New London, Connecticut to parents Wanda (Swinski) and Leslie Odell Johnson, Sr. He had lived in Mauriceville for the past 33 years, prior in Port Arthur, Texas. Robert was a Marine Electrician, working for Gulf Copper Manufacturing before retiring about 10 years ago. The year 2015 saw a change in Commissioners Court with two new members added, County Judge Brint Carlton and Commissioner Barry Burton serving from Precinct 2. Having served one year now as a commissioner Burton admits the job is not exactly what he expected it to be. Burton coming from the private said he needed to have a little patience in learning that government takes a consensus to operate properly and that takes time. Online registration for players and coaches is going on now at www.bcll.org. Representatives will be at the BC Elementary cafeteria on two Saturdays, 1/9 and 1/16, from 10a-3p assisting parents and coaches with the online process and taking payments. Looking Back at 2015
A man-eating alligator, baby Jesus and a kind cop brought international attention to Orange County in 2015. But for local residents, the closing of the hospital and layoffs at Invista affected more lives. Good news came at the end of the year with a state football championship. The West Orange-Stark High Mustangs won the title trophy after fielding three teams in three state championships within 12 months.
