It's a ritual for a low-lying community along the Sabine River. But this time, the National Weather Service is predicting "major, catastrophic flooding" for Deweyville. Still, people like 75-year-old Darrell Hryhorchuk say they're staying in their homes and not evacuating. Sheriff’s Detective Resigns
Orange County Sheriff Keith Merritt said detective sergeant Chad Hogan resigned Thursday after federal investigators came to the sheriff's office and revealed an investigation against Hogan. "My understanding is it has something to do with fraud through HUD," Merritt said. Hogan is a long-time law enforcement officer and was serving as the public information officer for the sheriff's office. Flood Water Could Set Record
The Sabine River Authority at 6 Thursday morning began a record release of water from Toledo Bend Reservoir, spokeswoman Ann Galassi said. Galassi said flooding of the Sabine River in Deweyville is expected to go five feet above the level in May 1989. At that time, the river reached near the tops of utility poles at the end of West Bluff Road in north Orange County. Simmons Drive and parts of Green Avenue in Orange were flooded, too. A former Vidor teacher was arrested off Interstate 10 in Orange Tuesday afternoon. Orange police report they found about an ounce of methamphetamine in the car she was driving. It was the second methamphetamine arrest for 35-year-old Lauren Leigh Courmier in less than four months. She was out of jail on bond from her November arrest when she was stopped for a traffic violation Tuesday. Law officers in November reported she had 9.6 ounces of the drug.
