New Bobcat baseball coach Tim Erickson comes to Orangefield after six seasons with Hardin-Jefferson. Erickson takes over a Bobcat program that only graduated one senior and has lots of players returning for this year. Experience should be a strong point for Orangefield with all the Bobcats that played on the varsity last year and even before that. Topping the list is a trio of excellent players. Pinehurst, WO Cancel Elections
The cities of Pinehurst and West Orange will be able to cancel their municipal elections because there are no contested races in either city. The deadline for filing was Friday of last week. City Secretary Debbie Cormier reported only incumbents Dan Mohon, T. W. Permenter, and Sarah McLendon filed for the three seats on the Pinehurst City Council. Cormier indicated the municipal election in Pinehurst will be cancelled at the next City Council meeting scheduled for March 14. Commissioners Rescind Resolution
After over 30 minutes of citizens’ comments concerning the fleeting of barges near the Bessie Heights Marsh on the Neches River, the Commissioners Court approved Tuesday rescinding its resolution of last June opposing the operations. Savage Inland Marine has been fleeting barges in the Bessie Heights Marsh without permits from the General Land Office since before last summer. Attorney Michael Truncale represents Savage Inland Marine and said their operation represents a $3.8 million benefit to Orange County with jobs and other local spending in the area. Man May Get New Trial
A Beaumont man convicted of murder for a collision that killed a Vidor teenager in three years ago might get a new trial after a Texas Court of Criminal Appeals ruling. The court ruled last week that the state district judge in Orange should have allowed the jury to consider a manslaughter charge along with the murder charge. 35-year-old Kelvin Lee Roy was convicted of murder for killing 16-year-old Alexandria “Lexy” Bertrand. The jury in August 2014 gave a punishment of 75 years. Roy’s attorney at the time had requested that the jury also consider a manslaughter charge. Donkey Basketball
The Deweyville FFA is sponsoring a donkey basketball game on Saturday at 6 p.m. in the high school gym. The players will ride live donkeys as they play ball. The donkeys are specially selected for the show by the Dairyland Donkey Ball group. The donkeys, which weigh up to 500 pounds, have names like "Hemorrhoid" or "Widow Maker." A widespread electrical outage across Orange early Tuesday morning was caused by a transmission line tripping offline, according to Entergy spokesman Andrew Schonert.
