Early Voting Begins Monday
Early voting for city council seats and school board races will begin on Monday. In Orange County, the elections will include two special issues. People in the Vidor ISD will be voting on a $73.5 million bond election to build a new high school. Residents in the Orange County Emergency Services District No. 4, which covers the Mauriceville and McLewis area, will be voting on a property tax increase and the creation of a sales tax. Rain Holds Off, Butterflies Released
Shangri La held the annual Earth Day Ecofest Saturday and Entergy donated 1,500 butterflies for the release in the afternoon. The butterfly release starts with kids tossing out fresh orange slices so the sleeping, refrigerated butterflies can drink the juice when they are released from envelopes. Undercover narcotic buys were made in the past on Gibbs St. in Newton. One bad guy arrested and small amount of drugs. So good when we all work together. Pinehurst Mayor Running For Co. Judge
Pinehurst Mayor Pete Runnels said he will be running as a Republican for Orange County Judge in 2018. Runnels served as county judge in the late 1970s until 1983, when he lost a bid for re-election. "I see a lot of things that can be done differently," he said about county government. He said he has visited with county employees in different departments and people in the public. Connie Sue Melancon, 60, of Little Cypress passed away on Friday, April 21, 2017 at her residence. Connie was born on September 5, 1956 in Port Arthur to parents Ernest Chester and Ethel Marie (Hilton) O’Quinn. She had lived in the Little Cypress area for 22 years and was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Orange. She was a retired insurance agent. Man Finds Snake In Truck
Wednesday a delivery driver was in between Bridge City and the Rainbow Bridge when he saw the head of a snake come out from underneath his dashboard. A Bridge City police officer saw he had pulled over and stepped out of his vehicle so he stopped to offer assistance. When he told him about the snake, BC Animal Control Officer Stacy Snell was called to the rescue. He was able to grab the large snake and unravel it from inside the dash. Friday night the West Orange-Stark Mustangs kept their district record unblemished with a 7-3 win over the Orangefield Bobcats at Paul Cormier Field in Orangefield. The victory sets up a battle for first place Tuesday in Silsbee between West Orange-Stark (9-0) and the Tigers (8-1). The Mustangs will mostly likely use Jack Dallas to pitch that game.
