Gervais Clinton Higginbotham, Sr., 72, passed away May 21, 2017 in Beaumont, Texas. He was born August 5, 1944 to parents Gervais and Donna Pearl (Stark) Higginbotham in Port Arthur, Texas. Gervais proudly served his country in the Army during the Korean War. He was a pipefitter by trade and a member of the Pipefiters Local 195 in Nederland for many years. Ball Official State Musician In 2018
An Orange native is lined up to replace King George January 1. The Texas Legislature has declared that bluesy, piano-playing Marcia Ball will be the Official State Musician for 2018. The current state musician is George Strait. Ball was born in Orange in 1949 at the old city hospital where the Shangri La parking lot is today. Commissioners Table Action Items
The Commissioners Court tabled Tuesday taking any action on two significant items on the agenda. Both will be reviewed for possible consideration at next week’s meeting. The professional agreement with HDR Incorporated to prepare the Master Plan for repairs and renovations to the Orange County Courthouse was postponed until next week. Assistant County Attorney Doug Manning requested a little more time to review the document, and the Commissioners all appreciated more time to look it over as well. Christine Vermeulen Hanchey will be able to keep her 28 feet of wooden fence in the Old Orange Historic District. All three attending members of the City of Orange Historic Preservation Commission voted to give a certificate of appropriateness for the fence Monday evening. Commission Chair Ben Meadows said it was a hard decision for him because Hanchey did not follow city ordinances to get a building permit for the fence.
