Tuesday night was a special night at the Pinehurst City Council meeting. Two councilman were sworn in after winning re-election on May 2 and two firemen were recognized for going beyond the call.
It was also supposed to be a joyous occasion for the new incoming mayor Lee Hayes, but he was not at the swearing in ceremony. Hayes informed KOGT that unfortunately he could not be there because of a death in the family. Hayes said he will take office at the next Pinehurst meeting. He will replace Sarah McClendon, who had been mayor since May 2022. She lost to Hayes by 37 votes in her re-election bid.
Councilman Greg Willis and Councilwoman Cynthia Adams, both winning re-election, were sworn in by Tommy Gunn. Both told KOGT they “only want what’s best for Pinehurst and enjoy a council that has worked well together.”
Also at the meeting, Fire Chief Steven Peais recognized volunteer firemen Will Cochran and Nick Zerko with certificates for going above the call of duty.
Both men were involved in a call where they used CPR to save a man. Peais said, “”We don’t do this to be heroes, we do this because we have a calling. But it’s nice to be recognized for services we provide.”
