Steve McCarty, the first football coach and Athletic Director at West Orange-Stark, will be inducted into the Stephen F. Austin University Athletics Hall of Fame Feb. 18 in Nacogdoches.
Coach McCarty is a two-time graduate of Stephen F. Austin (1965 & 1970). McCarty worked in the athletics department at SFA for 21 years, including the final 15 as athletics director. He retired from SFA on August 31, 2005, but would be awarded the title of Athletic Director Emeritus in July of 2014. He would also serve on the SFA Board of Regents from 2009 to 2015, including an election as Chair of the Board of Regents from 2013-2015. During his time in Nacogdoches, Lumberjack and Ladyjack athletics experienced success across the board. Lumberjack and Ladyjack athletic teams earned two NCAA playoff berths in football, three NCAA Volleyball Championship appearances and two NIVC appearances, 14 NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship appearances, an appearance in the NCAA Men’s Golf Regional, three Southland Conference soccer titles, an NCAA Soccer Championship appearance and six SLC cross country titles, including the four men’s championships, two women’s track and field titles and one men’s track and field title. SFA athletics saw an overall upgrade in its facilities during McCarty’s last decade. It was during that that time that SFA built the Jimmy W. Murphy Wellness Center and a new athletic training and academic center. He was recognized nationally for accomplishments at SFA when he received the Gen. Robert R. Neyland Outstanding Athletic Director Award from the All-American Football Foundation.
The other members of the 2022 class include Ana Rodriquez (Track and Field/Cross Country), Laura Cramer (Volleyball), and Melissa Peay Gregg (Basketball).
