Lawrence Dean “Larry” Samms, 77, of Hemphill, Texas, passed away on July 18, 2026. Born on May 30, 1949, in Wichita, Kansas, to Leslie Doyle Samms and Frances Arlene Dory Samms, Larry was a cherished member of the community. He had attended Orange High School where he enjoyed playing football. For many years, he was a resident of Westlake, Louisiana before moving to Sabine County in 2009.
Larry proudly served his country as a member of the United States Marine Corps, completing two tours in Vietnam. His commitment to service continued in his civilian career as a Master Electrician for PPG Industries, now known as West Lake Chemicals, where he worked for 33 years. He played vital roles as a fire captain and Hazmat Technician at the chemical refinery. Additionally, Larry was a fire captain, instructor, and firefighter for Texas A&M for over 25 years and a deep dive rescue instructor.
After retiring, Larry enjoyed a peaceful life on Toledo Bend Lake, engaging in his passions for hunting, fishing, and birdwatching. He was an avid fisherman, participating in freshwater fishing and tournament fishing, and enjoyed surf fishing at Sea Rim. Birdwatching, traveling and camping with his wife were among his favorite activities, alongside traveling to Hill Country and the Guadalupe River.
Larry was a member of First Christian Church in Orange, Texas. His faith and community were central to his life, as was his membership in the Patriot Guard, reflecting his ongoing commitment to honor and service.
He is survived by his loving wife, Joan Samms of Hemphill; son, Joshua Samms and wife, Ashlee, of Orangefield, Texas; sister, Linda Porter and her husband, Larry, of Pennsylvania; granddaughter, Hope AnnMarie Samms; and his faithful friend, border collie, Little Aggie.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 25, 2026, at Starr Funeral Home Chapel, 510 Starr Street in Hemphill, Texas, with Bro. James Stratton and Charles Johnson officiating.
Memorial arrangements were handled by Starr Funeral Home. Larry’s life and service will be remembered fondly by all who knew him.
