Newton County Sheriff Robert Burby (above) held a press conference Monday to announce that the DNA from bones found in his county, have been connected to a missing man from Vidor.
Back in July a skull was found near the Sabine River near the Belgrade Community. Several days later some other human bones were found several hundred yards south of that location.
Burby confirmed that those two sets of bones were from the same person, and that person has been identified as 52 year old Wayne Ayers of Vidor. Ayers was reported missing by family in April of this year.
Burby said the case is now considered a homicide.

Retirement for Mrs. Vicki
On Wednesday, November 15th, 2023, we said bye to one of our dedicated employees. Mrs. Vicki, as she was affectionately called, retired from the Sheriff’s Office after 16 years of service. Retirement is a “bittersweet” thing. On one hand you are happy to see someone reach their ultimate goal-retirement, but nevertheless hate to see them go.
I provided our sincere thanks and appreciation to Mrs. Vicki for outstanding work and service to Newton County Sheriff’s Office. Her long and dedicated service concluded a successful career with the Sheriff’s Office as Dispatcher, Jailer, and my Administrative Assistant.
Congratulations on your retirement and I wish all the best for you and your family in the future.
