Patti June Wylie, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, mother-in-law, and friend, passed away on August 8, 2026, at the age of 71, following a courageous battle with cancer.
Patti was born in Orange, Texas, on August 14, 1954, to Patrick McPayne and Trilby McPayne. She grew up with her older half-brother, Owen, and younger brothers, Mike and Eddie. She spent much of her adult life in Houston before moving to Columbus, Indiana, in 1997. In 2013, she returned to Houston to help care for her mother. In June 2026, she moved to Burbank, California, to live with her daughter Veronica while receiving hospice care.
Patti met her husband, Peter Wylie, when her daughter Leslie was nine years old. They married in December 1983 and shared 42 years together. Peter was a loving father figure to Leslie, a role that was deeply meaningful to Patti.
Patti was the mother of Veronica, Trevor, Samuel, and her late daughter Leslie. She was also grandmother to Rhianna and Gregory, Leslie’s children, and Lucas, Cooper, and Tristan, Trevor’s children. She is also survived by her children-in-law, Nikki Wylie and Joseph Crandall.
But Patti’s definition of family extended far beyond biology. She became a second mother to many of her children’s friends and a beloved presence in her Columbus neighborhood. Her home was a gathering place, particularly during holidays, when she welcomed people who were far from their own families. She had an extraordinary heart for children and worked for several years in foster child placement, fostering many children herself.
Patti was a lifelong reader, especially of fantasy and science fiction, and was a devoted Star Trek fan. She loved the movie Aliens, the Zelda video game series, dogs, cooking and baking, painting ceramic figurines, and playing games with her family. Canasta was a particular favorite and became a treasured family tradition.
She was also known for her irreverent sense of humor. Even during her long battle with cancer, she maintained her ability to laugh. After battling three types of cancer beginning in 2013 and reaching remission in 2014, she faced breast cancer again beginning in 2020. She fought with remarkable determination until the end. During family canasta games, she would jokingly remind everyone, “You have to let me win; I’m dying.”
Patti was a devout Christian and attended Inwood Baptist Church in Houston and Community Church of Columbus while living in Indiana.
She was preceded in death by her daughter Leslie, her parents Patrick and Trilby McPayne, and her beloved aunt Jenelle. She is survived by her husband, Peter; children Veronica, Trevor, and Samuel; daughter-in-law Nikki Wylie; son-in-law Joseph Crandall; grandchildren Rhianna, Gregory, Lucas, Cooper, and Tristan; brothers Owen, Mike, and Eddie; and the many friends and extended family members who considered Patti part of their family.
Patti’s life was defined by generosity, humor, faith, and an extraordinary capacity to make room for one more person at her table. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
A memorial service will be held at the Humble Civic Center in Humble, Texas, on October 11, 2026, at 11:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Cancer Society in Patti’s memory.
