
UPDATE from Sulphur Police:
On July 11, 2026 at approximately 9:15pm an Officer with the Sulphur Police Department observed a 2014 Mercedes traveling north bound on North Huntington Street near the intersection of Pearl St at a high rate of speed. Officer attempted to stop the vehicle, but the vehicle accelerated and refused to stop resulting in a pursuit. The pursuit continued as the vehicle made its way to I-10 and went eastbound to I-210. The vehicle took exit 3 and turned around and got back on I-210 westbound and back to I-10 The pursuit continued on I-10 at speeds up to 130 mph.
As the vehicle entered the construction zone near Vinton, the driver began passing vehicles on the shoulder, striking multiple traffic cones. The vehicle continued across the Sabine River into Texas, where Officers from Texas agencies were waiting to assist. The pursuit continued and the vehicle exited the interstate. Shortly afterward, a tire failed, causing the driver to lose control. The vehicle struck a guardrail, left the roadway, and entered Adams Bayou.
Due to the location of the vehicle, officers were unable to immediately access it and did not observe anyone exit after it entered the water. Once the vehicle was recovered from the bayou, officers located two deceased occupants inside: an adult white male driver and an adult Black male passenger.
Investigators are working to positively identify both individuals and notify their next of kin. The incident remains under investigation.
