Coach Cornel Thompson is putting his whistle back on but this time it will have a maroon lanyard.
Thompson is joining Toby Foreman’s staff at Jasper. Foreman got the job in the spring after spending nine seasons at Killeen Shoemaker. Thompson coached and worked alongside Foreman when they were at West Orange-Stark.
Thompson retired four years ago from the Mustangs after 11 seasons as head coach with four appearances in the State Title game and two State Championships (2015-16). Jasper will travel to WOS on Oct. 30.
“I couldn’t pass up the opportunity,” Thompson said. “I’m getting the opportunity to coach with Mark Foreman and Thomas Brooks. Two guys I coached on the defensive side of the ball 40 years ago at WOS.”
Right now this is a one year project. Thompson, 78, is helping out Foreman after he lost his Defensive Coordinator Derek Peveto two weeks ago following allegations of inappropriate relations with a minor. But once the competitive juices start flowing again, and he sees what he might have coming back the following year, who knows.
“Obviously we’re excited to have T in Jasper,” said Foreman. “With him, my dad, Coach Brooks and our other coaches, I know the defense is in good hands and I can concentrate more on the offense.”
However it goes, and no one’s betting against him, Thompson will have to add a new chapter to his next book. And it starts Monday.
