
The Lady Bears started the year off strong by finishing their first tournament with 4 wins and 2 losses at the Goose Creek/Baytown Tournament. They lost to Iowa Colony 3-2 and LaPorte 5-2 while some of their athletes were playing basketball. Then they won four in a row with wins over Humble, Sam Rayburn, CE King, and Houston Lamar.
As a team, the Lady Bears outscored their opponents 59-14, racking up 51 hits on the weekend, including 30 singles, 12 doubles, 4 triples, and 5 home runs. The Lady Bears were also quick on the bases, successfully stealing 18 bases in 19 attempts.
Several Lady Bears contributed significantly to the offensive explosion. Eden Frenzel led the charge, going 7-for-11 with a triple, an in-the-park home run, 5 RBIs, and 4 stolen bases. Lexis Moss (right) added power at the plate, going 8-for-15 with two doubles, two home runs, 8 RBIs, and 2 stolen bases. Tessa Erickson was strong as well, going 8-for-16 with two doubles, a triple, and 2 stolen bases. Jillian Brown added consistency with a 6-for-12 performance, including three doubles and 5 RBIs. And Keylie Washburn (left) rounded out the offense, going 4-for-10 with a double, a triple, two home runs, 7 RBIs, and 2 stolen bases. Kendall Jones also contributed 4 RBIs of her own and 4 stolen bases.
The Lady Bears were defensively solid as well, committing only 3 errors in 104 chances, which included turning a smooth triple play. On the mound, the Lady Bear pitching staff was dominant, facing 103 batters and allowing only 9 earned runs on 22 hits. Ella Stephenson led the way with 14 strikeouts, giving up 9 hits and 4 walks, while Tessa Erickson was also strong, striking out 6 and allowing only 8 hits and 3 walks.
The Lady Bears will be back on the road next week, looking to keep their momentum going with a game versus Nederland on Tuesday and the Battle of the Best Tournament in Sweeny next weekend.
