Led by a remarkable Houston debut from Trade Deadline acquisition
Aaron Sanchez, the Astros spun the Majors’ second combined no-hitter of the
season on Saturday night, silencing the Mariners in a 9-0 win at Minute Maid
Park.
Sanchez, whose 6.07 ERA and 14 losses with Toronto at the time of Wednesday’s
trade belied his considerable talent, worked six innings before handing off to
Will Harris. Sanchez walked two, and the no-hit effort — the 14th combined
no-no in Major League history — was finished off by Chris Devenski. Joe
Biagini, also acquired from Toronto at the Deadline, worked the eighth.
It’s the 12th no-no in Astros history, and the franchise’s first since Aug. 21,
2015, when Mike Fiers threw the first of his two career no-hitters. A record
six Astros pitchers combined to no-hit the Yankees in the Bronx on June 11,
2003, when Brad Lidge earned the win with two perfect innings after starter Roy
Oswalt exited with an injury.
