The City of Vidor, having completed the multi-step certification process, has been designated as a Music Friendly Community by the Texas Music Office (TMO). The Music Friendly Community program seeks to foster music business-related economic development in Texas cities and communities.
Tuesday a ceremony was held at the Vidor City Hall with Chip Adams (left) from the TMO presenting the designation to Mayor Misty Songe, City Manager Robbie Hood, and Councilman Gary Herrera.
In a statement from Governor Greg Abbott, he said, “With support from the Texas Music Office, in 2019 the Texas music industry created more than 210,000 direct and indirect permanent jobs in communities all across the Lone Star State and generated $27.3 billion in economic activity. Music Friendly Communities certified by the Texas Music Office are serious about attracting and developing the local music industry to spur job creation and economic growth. I congratulate Vidor on earning the Music Friendly Community designation, and I look forward to amplifying their continued success.”
Several bands and musicians played including Britt Godwin who hosts the Britt Godwin Country Show on KOGT each Wednesday.
“Music lies deep in our roots and many people outside the area don’t realize that,” said Songe. “This designation will help us spotlight the musical talent we have in our area.”
Vidor already has a Walk of Fame at city hall featuring names like George Jones, Clay Walker, and Tracy Byrd. They now feature a wall inside the building with pictures and information about those who have contributed. And they have room on the wall to add more although there are dreams of an area that will host musical events and feature a building with all of the memorabilia in the future.
Vidor joins more than 20 other Texas cities that have received the official Music Friendly Community designation. These cities include Fort Worth, Austin, San Antonio, Denton, Lindale, Stephenville, Conroe, San Angelo, Nacogdoches, Abilene, McKinney, Waxahachie, Waco, Alpine, Bastrop, New Braunfels, Victoria, Lubbock, Denison, Arlington, Brenham, Dripping Springs, Round Rock, El Paso, and Odessa. Cities that are currently working through the certification process include Houston and Dallas.
