Orange County ESD 4 firefighters were dispatched to a reported truck-versus-house crash in the 16000 block of Highway 62 in Orange County at approximately 4:30 Saturday morning.
When firefighters arrived, they found a Ford pickup truck had veered off the highway and crashed into two homes. One of the homes was vacant, while the other was occupied. Fortunately, the residents inside the occupied home were not injured.
Firefighters checked the pickup but found the driver was no longer at the scene. The driver reportedly fled following the crash, and DPS troopers began searching the area for the suspect.
According to the homeowners, one of the residents normally sleeps in a chair in the living room, but had decided to sleep in the bedroom instead. That decision may have prevented her from being seriously injured in the crash.
DPS troopers at the scene said the pickup was traveling northbound on Highway 62 when it veered off the roadway and struck the two houses.
Both homes sustained major damage.
The Texas Department of Public Safety is continuing its investigation, including efforts to locate the driver.
