Last season was historic at Bridge City as the Cardinals made it to the post season and won their first playoff game in 60 years against Hardin-Jefferson. The graduation of a great class of senior lettermen for the Cardinals leaves little experience to build on this year.
Coach Randall Robertson has just one senior to build his team around. The lone senior is four-year starter for the Cardinals Ethan Oceguera. He will be a workhorse for Bridge City and a leader with all of his experience.
Two juniors played a little time on varsity as replacements when COVID took away other players on the Bridge City varsity last season. Robertson identified, “Walker Britten, guard, really good shooter and point guard Fernando Rodriguez.”
There are some young Cardinals who Robertson hopes will make the varsity a stronger team. Six sophomores and a couple of freshmen are working to find playing time on the varsity for Bridge City.
Sophomore Lincoln Breaux is a good inside player who rebounds well and could fill the post for Robertson. Two guards that are very quick and athletic are sophomores Rayburn Hebert and AG Guiterrez.
A couple more sophomores that could see playing time at the post are Ayden Richardson and Aaron Torres. “Two freshmen that may have a chance to help us out are guard Jagger Carlin and post Bryce Linder,” Robertson added.
The Cardinals are getting experience as the season progresses. Bridge City has been playing some tough teams to start the season and was 5-7 with no exceptional games early.
This is a really young group of Cardinals that Coach Robertson evaluated as learning just as he is. They make a lot of mistakes but they give great effort every game and they go hard.
It is a game-by-game process for Bridge City moving towards the district schedule. Robertson explained, “We’re trying to put the pieces together to try to make us at least a playoff contender by the time district starts on December 17 against Vidor.”
This will probably be a rebuilding year for the Cardinals, Roberson just wants to see improvement from them each game and will gain a competitive team for the next two or three years. With only one senior graduating after this season Robertson has good expectations for the future of the Bridge City basketball program. “Obviously, we want to give every game our best and try to make the playoffs with this group, though it may not happen this year we’re still just going to work towards the future and getting a little better each game every time we come out,” Robertson concluded.
