
Four about a year and a half city employees in Pinehurst have been on a four day work week (Mon-Thur) working 10 hours a day. New mayor Lee Hayes thought it should go back to five.
It was on the agenda Tuesday at the regular meeting of the Pinehurst City Council. The mayor said he has run plenty of businesses and the five day work week is more productive for the citizens and the employees.
Former City Administrator Jerry Hood spoke during public comments and used up all of his allotted time to voice his opposition to the idea while talking about the thought and efforts that went in to working with employees to make the decision while he was with the city.
Several councilman including Troy Pierce, Joey Vance and Mike Shahan said they have received no complaints from citizens or employees and that the four day week was actually an incentive to bring in new hires.
There was a motion but it died for the lack of a second.
Pinehurst Police Chief Jason Holyfield was glad to announce his department was now fully staffed after Officer Scott Duncan was sworn in. Holyfield added that Duncan’s experience included time as a narcotics investigator.
Code Enforcement Officer Adam Good reported the new 55+ apartments on Park Ave. (Pinehurst Villas) passed inspection and should be opening soon.
He said there have been several complaints about the dust from the new North Early Learning Center being built. People complaining about having trouble breathing and problems with pool filters, etc. Good said the contractor, G&G Enterprises, will be using water trucks to try and keep the dust down.
The Pinehurst Volunteer Fire Dept. reported 14 new members have joined the department since January and thanked the council for the new fire truck that will be added in the future. Also they are looking at creating a women’s auxiliary.
The city also announced they are working with a company who will be replacing all 90 of the fire hydrants in the city. They are also bringing back their Trunk or Treat event in October as well as participating in National Night Out, a community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships.
