First Time First Responder

Many young people dream of becoming a first responder as either a police officer or as a fire fighter.  Thursday a young man in Pinehurst got to experience being both. Tommy Craig is age 25 and has autism.  Shannon Lee is a close friend of Tommy, and she is also a lifelong friend with Pinehurst Police Chief Fred Hanauer.  Lee called Hanauer, and he arranged for Tommy to get up close and personal with the police and fire departments in Pinehurst. Auditorium Named For Bryant

The Bridge City is honoring long-time teacher and musician Ann Bryant by naming the stage area at the elementary school in her honor. The dedication will be 6 p.m. Tuesday, August 9, at the school, 1035 West Roundbunch Road. The Ann Bryant Auditorium pays tribute to the woman who taught in the school district for 56 years. She spent a total of 62 years in public education after beginning as a teacher at the old Colburn Elementary School in Orange in 1948. Ruth Jacobs Toups

Ruth Jacobs Toups, 84, of Orange, Texas, passed away on July 21, 2016, at her home surrounded by family. A Memorial Mass will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, July 30, 2016, at St. Henry Catholic Church in Bridge City, Texas. Officiating will be Father Steve Leger. Terry Marshall, 54, of Orange, Texas, passed away on July 21, 2016, at her home surrounded by loved ones. Truck Rolls Over Man

A 36-year-old Groves man was injured Monday when the pickup truck he was working on rolled over him at a truck stop parking lot. The truck then rolled out into the highway and hit a traveling vehicle. The incident was about 2:30 p.m. in the Flying J Travel Plaza off Interstate 10 at Highway 62. Orange police said Ryan Sullivan was working on his Dodge Ram pickup in the southwest corner of the parking lot. The truck began to roll and he ran to try to stop it. Standoff Ends Peacefully

A police stand-off with a suicidal man believed to have a gun ended peacefully this morning on Tulane Road near Autumn Oaks Cemetery. The 58-year-old man was sent to a hospital under a mental commitment. Orange Police Detective Captain Robert Enmon said the Orange County SWAT was called out but was not used. The Orange County Sheriff's Office helped at the scene. Enmon described the scene as a "very tense situation." Patient is Car Thief Suspect

A thief took an SUV outside a convenience store Tuesday morning as the vehicle's owner was inside getting coffee. The owner told Orange police he left the keys inside the black Chevrolet Tahoe. Witnesses said the owner ran outside and chased after the SUV when a woman drove it away. The theft was about 6 a.m. at the Smart Stop, 811 Strickland Drive. Orange police report the man had parked the car at a gas pump and went inside. Another customer saw a woman standing at the corner of the building walk up to the Tahoe and jump inside. Foster Fights Friday

Foster lost the fight by decision. O'Shaquie Foster of Orange will make his third appearance on ShoBox this Friday night.  ShoBox is part of Showtime's live boxing matches that they've been doing for 15 years on the pay cable network. Foster, a featherweight with a professional mark of 10-1 with 7 KO's, is taking on Rolando Chinea (12-1-1, 6KO) in a fight scheduled for eight rounds at Foxwoods Casino in Mashantucket, Connecticut.  It's scheduled to be the first of a four bout card that starts at 9pm.  This will be Chinea's first fight on ShoBox.
