A West Orange – Cove CISD school vehicle was involved in an accident this morning (Saturday, Jan. 7, 2017) at approximately 6:30 a.m. The vehicle, driven by a West Orange - Stark High School teacher, was entering the I-10 access ramp at Highway 62 when it hit a patch of ice and flipped. All students were transported to St. Elizabeth Hospital. One student was treated for a broken collarbone. Another student was treated for a fractured eye socket. Charles “Charlie” Russell Akers, 67, of Orange, passed away on January 5, 2017, at his home. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Born in Ogden, Utah, on June 12, 1949, he was the son of Paul Nathan Akers and Rachael Akers. Charlie was a chemist at DuPont/Invista for over 35 years. He enjoyed HAM Radio, fishing, woodworking, and photography. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church where he was an elder. OC Creating Hospital District
Orange County is preparing to create a local hospital district, a government entity to build and operate a new hospital. Representatives of the cities, county, college, port, river authority and chemical plants, along with business leaders, met Friday to discuss the hospital situation. Baptist Hospital of Southeast Texas announced last month the emergency room at the Orange hospital will close on Thursday. “I can’t stress enough how important this is,” County Judge Brint Carlton said. It was cold outside but the Bobcats were hot inside, outscoring BC 40-18 in the first half. They would improve to 1-0 in district with a 63-35 win over the Lady Cards (0-1). WOCCISD Member Jefferson-Simon Passes Away
Sarah Jefferson-Simon, a West Orange-Cove school trustee and retired police detective, has passed away. She was 55. Simon was the first black woman detective in Orange County. She joined the Orange Police Department in January 1989 beginning as a patrol officer. She worked her way up to a detective sergeant before retiring in July 2014. Gladys Fay Stromseth, Age 71, Edmond, Oklahoma passed away January 5, 2017 at the Meadows Nursing Home in Orange Texas. The family will hold a private memorial service at a later date.
