Sarah Jefferson-Simon, a West Orange-Cove school trustee and retired police detective, has passed away. She was 55.
Simon was the first black woman detective in Orange County. She joined the Orange Police Department in January 1989 beginning as a patrol officer. She worked her way up to a detective sergeant before retiring in July 2014.
Also, Simon ran as a Democrat for Precinct 1 constable in 2012. She won the seat on the school board in May 2014.
