
Mold in drink dispensers and on walls, spider webs, plus foods stored on the floor were some of the problems Orange County Health Inspector James Scales has found so far in March.
Scales went to 34 businesses and restaurants dealing with food during the first part of the month. Of those, 17 got perfect scores of 100. They were all public schools or private child care businesses.
The lowest score was an 80 for the Donut Palace on Highway 12 in Mauriceville. Scales reported sausage, boudin, and eggs were not at safe temperatures. In addition, spider webs were throughout the shop and black mold was growing on a wall.
Little Cypress Elementary School had the lowest school score, a 98. The cafeteria got two demerits because the ice scoop was on top of the ice machine.
The perfect scores were public schools North Early Learning Center, West Orange-Stark High, West Orange-Stark Middle, Vidor Junior High, Oak Forest Elementary, Mauriceville schools kitchen, and Little Cypress-Mauriceville High.
Others are New Begininz Academy in Orange, Kid’s Castle in Bridge City, Shining Stars Learning in Vidor, Building Blocks Academy in Vidor, Little Pirate Learning Center inVidor, Loving Start Day Care in Vidor, Early Learning Child Care in Vidor, and Brighter Beginnings Child in Mauriceville.
Scales made pre-opening inspections with no scores at Redeemed Coffee Shop in Mauriceville, Funnel’D in Orange, Dime’s Delight Treats mobile unit, and La Vaquita Meat Market in Pinehurst.

Donut Palace, 11258 Highway 12 in Mauriceville: 80. Sausage, boudin, and eggs were not at safe temperatures. Sixteen boxes of eggs were sitting out at room temperature. Food handler certificate was needed. Handwashing stations needed hot water and paper towels. Products inside coolers needed dates. Spider webs were throughout store. Employee cell phone was stored improperly. Outside of equipment and Vent-a-Hood needed cleaning. Light shields were needed. Floors, walls, and ceiling needed to be cleaned. Black mold was growing on the walls by the three-compartment sink.Current health report and certified food manager certificate were not posted in front.
Get-N-Go, 1150 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 83. Inspector pulled several expired foods from shelves. Inside of cappuccino machine and ice machine needed to be cleaned of old foods, mold, and slime. Hot water did not reach proper temperature. Store name and address were needed on bags of ice being sold. Dates were needed for products in coolers. Employee bathroom needed paper towels and needed to be cleaned and sanitized. Drinks were stored on the floor. Current health report was not posted in front.
Fuel Runner, 1510 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 86. Inspector pulled several expired foods from shelves. Mold was on drink dispensors. Inside of cappucino machine needed to be cleaned of oldfoods. Hot water did not reach proper temperature. Products inside coolers needed dates. Store name and address were needed on bags of ice being sold. Drinks were stored on the floor inside walk-in cooler. Ceiling tiles were damaged or missing. Ice scoop was on a storage shelf.
Burger King, 605 North Main Street in Vidor: 89. Time stamps were needed for produce prep lines. Hot holding equipment, outside of fixed equipment, Vent’a’Hood, floors, and walls needed to be cleaned. No employees had food handler certificates. Cell phone was stored next to drive-through register. Inspector recommended more general cleaning.
Sugar Shack Club and Sports, 1411 Simmons Drive in Orange: 93. Dates were needed on products in cooler and freezer. Certified food manager certificate was needed. Utensils were stored inside the handwashing station. Young child was inside mobile unit.
Texas Avenue Tavern, 2845 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 96. Dates were needed on products in coolers and freezers. Products were stored on the floor in the storage room. Air vents and ceiling above fryer needed to be cleaned.
Little Cypress Elementary, 5725 Meeks Drive in Orange: 97. Ice scoop was on top of ice machine.
Silver Fox Lounge, 2095 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 98. Dates were needed on products inside coolers and freezers.
Taco Bell, 835 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 99. Floors, especially behind fryers, needed to be cleaned.
California Corn Dog Stand, 795 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 99. Foods were stored on the floor instead of six inches off floor.
Panthers Den Preschool, 5970 White Oak Road in Mauriceville: 99. Employee food and drink were stored improperly in reach-in cooler.
Bright Beginnings Learning, 1023 Church Street in Vidor: 99. Hair restraints were needed.
