The Orange County Commissioners Court is scheduled to consider several items during its Tuesday, October 6 meeting, including a grant application that could help provide new bulletproof vests for Orange County Sheriff’s Office personnel.
Sheriff Bobby Smith is asking commissioners to authorize him to apply for the 2026 Patrick Leahy Bulletproof Vest Partnership Program. The federal program would reimburse Orange County for 50% of the cost of bulletproof vests purchased for Sheriff’s Office officers.
The court will also consider designating Terri Goss as the county’s representative to submit the grant pre-application and handle the required financial reporting through the U.S. Department of Justice website for the duration of the grant.
Commissioners are also expected to consider approval of the county’s 2027 Resolution for the Indigent Defense Grant Program. The action could include authorizing the County Judge or Judge Pro Tem to sign the resolution.
Several road-related matters are also on the agenda.
Commissioners will revisit a previously tabled request involving a 1.976-acre minor plat in the J.W. Bucknum Survey in Orange County. The property would be divided into two lots. The final plat has been reviewed and approved by the Orange County Road Administrator and the Orange County Drainage District, with required fees and tax documentation provided.
Road Administrator Tracy Leach is also seeking approval of a new software system for the county’s Mechanic Shop. In addition, commissioners will consider a proposed four-day workweek for the Road and Bridge Department, consisting of four 10-hour workdays.
The court will also consider approving a Police Canine Handler Agreement for Sheriff’s Office K-9 handler Marcus Hanson. The agreement would establish the responsibilities and requirements of the assigned handler. Commissioners could also formally accept the donation of the canine to Orange County.
The Orange County Commissioners Court meeting is scheduled for 10am, Tuesday, October 6, inside the Commissioners’ Courtroom located at 123 S. 6th Street.
