It was a special night Nellie Miller or as most call her Ms. Nellie.
With a large group of supporters and family filling the room, the Pine Forest Lodge Masons in Vidor presented Miller with the Community Builder Award.
The Masonic Community Builder Award is an honor presented by local Masonic Lodges to recognize outstanding non-Masons who have distinguished themselves through dedicated service to their community. It is typically the highest honor a lodge can bestow on someone outside its membership.
Miller gives her time as the advisor for the LCM Bass Club which has had a lot of success. She also volunteers her time working the tournaments and she is the “go to” person for other bass club advisors. Masons Charlie Atwood and Shae Low (pictured) showered Miller with praise while presenting her with her award.
“I am truly a person that believes community matters,” she said. “Never say No if you can say Yes when it comes to helping others.”
Miller said she became interested in fishing from her father and grandmother who were avid fishermen. Women weren’t known to like fishing back in her grandmother’s day but she loved it so much she had her husband dig them a pond on their property according to Miller. She credits them for her work ethic.
Her example has paid off. “I used to have to be the one to make our fishermen and parents do things and serve their community and now they pull me up when I need it.”
