At halftime of the West Orange-Stark football game Friday, four former Mustangs were the first to be inducted into the new WOS Hall of Honor. Not only are they Mustangs, they’re four of the most successful athletes Orange County has produced.
Three time Dallas Cowboy Super Bowl winner Kevin Smith leads the class. He helped the Mustangs win their first two State Championships in 1986-87 and was an All-Stater on both sides of the ball. He was an All-Southwest Conference defensive back with Texas A&M where he holds the interception record and will be inducted later this year to the College Football Hall of Fame Class of 2024.
1990 graduate Travessa (Gant) King was an incredible basketball player for WOS and for Lamar where she’s the #4 All-time scorer. In 1997 she was a member of the first WNBA Class, drafted by the Los Angeles Sparks. She also played overseas for an incredible 16 years.
Bonnie (Henson) Perry, a 1985 grad, was the first Lady Mustang to play Division I basketball. She left her mark at Baylor leading the team in scoring and led the conference in steals, averaging four per game. She left WOS as the schools leading scorer and she left Baylor as the steals leader and is also a Baylor Legend.
Earl Thomas was not in attendance and was represented by his family. Thomas excelled in four sports at WOS and was All-State in football. He was an All-American DB at Texas, helping the Longhorns reach the 2010 National Championship game. He was selected in the first round of the NFL Draft by Seattle where he was named an All-Pro five times as a member of the Legion of Boom, helping the Seahawks to win Super Bowl 48.
