For the first time in many years a rubber duck derby is set to take place in Orange this weekend. The Red Leggett Memorial Duck Derby benefiting Be Blessed Orange Texas will be dropping thousands of ducks into Adam’s Bayou on Saturday April 18th at 3pm at the Cove Marina. The first one across the finish line wins $1000. How does a duck derby work you might ask. A track will be created using oil spill containment booms that will funnel the ducks towards a finish line just wide enough for one duck to pass at a time. There is a cash prize for first through third place.
The community is invited to come out and watch the duck drop. The event starts at 2pm with the duck drop at 3pm. Live Cajun music by Dustin Ray will start at 6pm. Join us for crawfish and ice cream and watch the first duck derby ever hosted on Adam’s Bayou.
The Duck Derby is in memory of Red Leggett. A local Orange man that was passionate about the mission of Be Blessed. When Be Blessed was officially formed, he made sure he was the first one to donate to the organization. He was there with a smile to make the grocery runs for all the food every week. He knew food insecurity and if there was something he could do alleviate that for a child, he did it. When the duck derby was still in the idea stage, Red knew there was a way to drop the ducks and told us that he had that part covered, we just needed to plan it. Although he didn’t get a chance to, we know he would love to see what is planned for Saturday.
Be Blessed Orange Texas is non-profit that provides shelf stable weekend meals for children through the local schools. Every weekend, hundreds of children face the harsh reality of hunger. While school provides meals during the week, many of these students return home on Fridays without knowing where their next meal will come from. At Be Blessed Orange Texas, we’re working to change that—one child, one meal, and one weekend at a time.
Through the generosity of our community, we provide child-friendly weekend meals to students who would otherwise go without. This coming 2026-2027 school year, we anticipate serving approximately 575 children across 4-5 school districts. At $8 per week, each child’s weekend meals total $300 for the full school year, a small amount that makes an immeasurable impact. Our goal is to adopt 5000 ducks. Your support could feed one child or many children for a weekend, a month, or an entire year. Every gift goes directly to providing meals and hope. Ducks can be adopted at www.duckrace.com/beblessed.
