One of three horse riders shot and killed a dog that attacked the horses Sunday evening. The attack came as the riders were going along 15th Street.
Orange Police Detective Captain Robert Enmon said officers are investigating the shooting. “If they were protecting their horses or livestock from a stray dog, they are within their rights to protect,” he said.
Enmon said the three horses had bites, but were not seriously injured. The bites were on the hoofs, chest, shoulder, and mouth areas.
The rider who called police said a man who saw the attack fired a gun at the dog, but the dog did not stop biting the horses. A rider went home and got another firearm and shot the dog. Enmon said the dog ran around a house and expired. Officers did not report the kind of dog.
Police were called to a house in the Brownwood neighborhood about 6:30 p.m. as the rider reported the attack and shooting.
