Betty Jane Smith Fillyaw went to her heavenly home on Tuesday, March 6, 2018 in Newton, Texas. Betty was born on March 11, 1919 in Newton to Bonnie Giffin smith and Albert Smith. After spending her childhood and teenage years growing up in Newton and attending Newton schools where she made many memories and wonderful friends, she married Lee Roy Fillyaw. They were married for over 61 years. While she never worked outside her home, she stayed busy supporting her husband raising their 5 children, 13 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild. Betty was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Newton where she established and was the long time director of the FBC Mother’s Day Out Program. She worked many years in the church nursery. How she loved those children she was responsible for showing God’s love. Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Lee Roy Fillyaw, her two brothers, John Smith and Walter Smith, her sister, Jean Giffin and her daughter-in-law, Theresa Fillyaw. Left to cherish her memories are her daughters, Betty Powers and husband, Jimmy of Jasper, Donna Barrow and husband, Willie and Beverly Westbrook and husband, Tommy, both of Newton, her sons, Lee Fillyaw and wife, Vicki of Newton and Bobby Fillyaw and wife, Lana of Burkeville, her grandchildren, great grandchildren and her great great grandchild. Also, her sisters-in-law, Verna Smith of Newton, Wanda smith of Crystal Beach and Norene Brack of Groves and her brother-in-law, Rush Fillyaw of Newton and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. Visitation will be on Thursday from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm at smith Funeral Home in Newton. Funeral services will be on Friday, March 9, 2018 at 11:00 am at the First Baptist Church in Newton with burial following at the Newton City Cemetery.
