Bernice (“Bernie”) Schroder, 98, of Fort Worth passed away peacefully in Dallas on January 10, 2019. An extraordinarily joyful and energetic woman, she led a busy and accomplished life motivated by her enduring work-ethic and selfless devotion to family.
Born on August 29, 1920 in Manitoba, Canada to Polish immigrants, Bernie was the last surviving sibling of eight. At the age of eighteen, she left Canada to live in Chicago where her sisters resided and where she soon met and married her lifelong love, Peter Christian (“Chris”) Schroder. At the end of WWII, Chris and Bernie moved to Orange, Texas to pursue business interests with a Chicago friend. That venture sparked their thirty-year career in the restaurant industry. During the almost two decades spent living in Orange, they worked exhaustively as a team, owning and operating restaurants including The Igloo, Bernie’s Drive-In, and Al’s Seafood in Port Arthur. In the mid-1960s, they relocated to Fort Worth where they continued to satisfy the appetites of their loyal patrons in locations such as The SmokeStack Restaurant in Thurber, Texas and the Ramada Inn of Fort Worth.
Bernie sought excellence in her many endeavors including needlework, quilting, painting in all mediums, gardening, and her delicious cooking! Throughout her lifetime, she prepared scrumptious meals and delectable desserts, including a wide array of holiday treats during the Christmas season, for her large and grateful family. Her other hobbies included golfing, reading, and traveling.
Bernie was predeceased by her beloved husband of sixty-six years, Peter Christian Schroder, passing in 2006.
She is survived by her children, Christine Schroder Shivers of Fort Worth, Kathryne Schroder Bishop (Gene) of Dallas, Peter Schroder (Mary) of Fort Worth, Michael Schroder (Billie) of Southlake. Also surviving are her seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
She will forever be fondly remembered by all who knew and loved her.
Bernie’s memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, January 26, 2019, at Thompson’s Harveson & Cole, 702 8th Ave., Fort Worth, Texas, 76104
