Allen Royce Scales, 88, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on Tuesday, July 23, 2024, in Orange, Texas. Royce was born on August 5, 1935 and was a lifelong resident of Orangefield, Texas. Royce was an excellent athlete in high school and was an important member of the Orangefield basketball and football teams. Shortly after graduation he married his high school sweetheart, Cherry Rose Chandler of Orangefield. Royce and Cherry recently celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary. Together they shared a long, beautiful and prosperous life. After graduating high school, he began a 28 year career with DuPont, which was temporarily interrupted by a two year period spent in the Army stationed in San Francisco. Royce and Cherry returned to Orangefield with their first born son, Mark, and over the next few years the family expanded as they welcomed their second son, Gary, and daughter, Lisa. Royce was extremely invested in helping with the local Orangefield FFA and graciously provided pasture space, guidance, and transportation for many aspiring young farmers raising show quality animals. He went on to become an ambassador for the “Orange County Go Texan Committee” where he served as a board member for 40 years. He also stayed actively involved in the community by serving on the Claiborne Park and Appraisal District county boards.
After retiring from DuPont as a Business Specialist, Royce played an active role in the development the Superior Livestock Exchange business. He was a cattleman by birthright and could toss a lariat better than most. There was nothing he enjoyed more than being in the company of his friends and family while talking about cattle, farm life and sharing his favorite memories.
Royce was preceded in death by his parents, Grover and Virgie Scales, sisters Clementine Kvale and Wanda Sanders, and brother Jerry Scales. He is survived by his wife Cherry Chandler Scales; children Mark, Gary, and Lisa; sister Pam Honeycutt; several nieces and nephews; eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
The family will hold a celebration of life gathering at his grandson’s home at 2209 Oilla Road in Orangefield, Tx on Friday August 2, 2024 at 4pm.
